This was the Escort we originally bought back in 2001. It was a road rally prepared Mk1 Escort which will be gradually up rated to full stage rally spec. It's a Mexico spec Escort bought from Motorsport Parts. The usual Burton Road rally 1600 X-flow, Bilstein's all round, up rated leaf springs and steel wheels. The interior is the typical rally car stripped out bucket seats, roll cage, harnesses and alloy panels all over the place. Below are a couple of picture from Motorsport Parts that show off the car from a couple of angles. for all of you that like on the Isle of Man check out the Number plate. I have started a few small jobs before I take it to a body repair company for a few items mainly the rear wheel arch lips and the passenger floor, this hopefully shouldn't cost too much as I have most of the panel anyway from the last project, then it's off to the spray shop for a nice new coat of VW Blue. I will eventually have two thick white stripe running up the centre of the car similar to the AC Cobra design however I think I will wait till I have the shell bubble arched other wise it will look kind of silly. I have however been on a spending spray and bought a few nice add-ons. Namely a set of two up two down lamp brackets and two set of Cibies to go on them, a set of Oscars and a set of Cibie Iodes which will look very period. Also a pair of Cibe Iode headlights to replace the pair of Ford factory fitted candles however because they have no built in side light I'm going to fit a pair of the works sidelight which are the combined indicator and side light. Eventually get the rear end turrets and 5 linked however again I will wait to have the car bubble arched so I can have the whole thing done in one go to minimise the disruption in the mean time. Aside from that it's pure cosmetic items and personal preference. I almost forgot the fact that I will be converting the rear brakes from drums to discs as I have a pair of cossy rear calipers which have the mechanical handbrake release. keeps the mot boys happy, they have for some reason a disliking for just a normal hydraulic handbrake?? anyway Caprisport have a kit for changing over the brakes and they supply the brackets and discs you need to either get a sierra hand brake cable shortened by Speedy Cables or apparently a MK5 escort cable will work because it is shorter? |
